I.  Teambuilding Activities

II. Scriptwriting and Storyboarding

    A.  Benefits:

1. Filming and editing become much easier since less takes and cuts are needed.
2. Finding an appropriate set/site and also costumes and props is easier.

    B.  Steps:

          1.  Prewriting:  Brainstorm goal and story that can achieve that goal
          2.  Outline:  Major actions that need to be covered in the different scenes of the script
          3.  Pitch:  Especially useful for your students to do since it requires them to present their ideas to the class
          4.  Script:  Setting and dialog for your scenes

          5.  Storyboard:  Simple drawings that illustrate camera angles and essential costumes and props

    C.  Options:

1.  Story generators:

a.  Roleplay scenarios

b.  Story dice

c.  Opening lines

2.  Screenwriting software and tips:

3.  Storyboarding software and tips:

a.  Storyboards are used to discover problems with the story before you start filming and to make sure everyone, from the actors to the camera operator, is on the same page about what needs to be done to complete the project.  Before you pick up a camera, you need to spend time thinking about what shots and angles you want (wide establishing shot, close-up details shots, cutaways, etc), the purpose behind each shot, the props you'll need, and the story you'll tell with dialogue or action on the screen. Storyboards help flesh out these details and keep your project on task.   They also make it evident when you are repeating ideas already covered by previous action or dialogue.

b.  Click on the following links to view a compilation of ideas and techniques for storyboarding.

III.  Site Selection Criteria

      A.  Partial List of Factors:

1.  Is it necessary to get permission to film?
2.  Is the sim voice-enabled?
3.  Are there useful or annoying background sounds?
4.  Are there avatars on the sim that might be useful as extras or problematic?
5.  Is it possible to shoot several different type of scenes on the same sim?

      B. Site Options:

1.  Historic or culturally rich Second Life sims:  ancient Rome, King Arthur’s court, the Wild West, Parisian catacombs, Berlin in the 1920’s, modern New York, outer space colonies, underwater cities, etc.  Visit SL Destinations to choose the best place for your machinima: http://secondlife.com/destinations?lang=en-US

2..EduNation holodecks:  a holodeck stores Second Life scenes and lets you load them from a menu whenever you want.  Scenes can include any prim object, including furniture, pose balls, and particle generators. The following links give more information on holodecks:

3.  Simple cube sets:  construction instructions and a sample will be given.

4.  Machinima Open Studio Project:

IV.  Suggested Work to Complete Before Next Week:

A.  Prepare scripts/story boards

B.  Take photos of your sets/sims and costumes
